Using the Dissolve mode

- [Narrator] In this movie, I'll show you a practical application for the dissolve mode. Specifically, we're going to take these white hand-drawn letters, and turn them into this carved effect here. Alright so the first thing I'm going to do is zoom on in and I want you to see how I created this layer. I started off by going up to the Layer menu, choosing New Fill Layer, and then choosing Solid Color. And then inside the color picker dialog box, I chose a color of white. Next, I went ahead and added a layer mask, and I painted my layers in white against a black background. And the reason I worked this way is that allows me to feather the layer from the Properties panel. And to make that happen, go ahead and double-click on that layer mask thumbnail to bring up the Properties panel, and then I came up with the feather value of four pixels, like so. And what that allows me to do, after I get done hiding the Properties panel, is change my blend mode from Normal to Dissolve. And that way…
