When the Object Selection tool is active, Photoshop offers a checkbox called Object Subtract in the horizontal options bar. Its job is to help you automatically deselect areas by pressing the Alt or Option key while dragging. If you turn the checkbox off, the Object Selection tool deselects with a rectangular marquee or free-form lasso.
