Using blend modes to create a photorealistic composite

- Blend modes are often used for an illustrative or interpretive effect, such as you might see in a graphic design project or an image based on the intangible elements often found in dreams, memory, or emotions. But with the right images blend modes can also be used to create a very convincing photorealistic effect. Now in this file we've got two layers, we have the carved stone Face, and then down below the image of the Rock Climber. What we're gonna do is make the face look as if it is carved into this rock here. Now we're gonna use blend modes to do that and it's gonna come out looking pretty cool. The first thing we need to do is make the face smaller, so that it will fit onto the rock. So what I'm gonna do is convert the Face layer into a Smart Object. This will allow me to scale the face smaller in a non-destructive way so that no pixels are actually thrown away. This gives me the freedom to later on maybe scale the face up larger, if I felt that I wanted to if I change my mind.…
