Using filters and blend modes with Smart Objects

- The use of smart objects also unlocks another great option. Blending modes, but for your filters, You can now apply filters and easily blend the results using blending modes like we've been doing with adjustment layers. Here's how it works. I've shown you the end result here. And what we've done is applied an effect such as find edges plus a radial blur to emphasize the light. Well, here's how that works. Start by selecting the layer and right-click and converting it for smart objects. Now, every filter works as a smart filter. So for example, I'll press D for my default colors of black and white, and I'll choose Filter, Stylize, Find Edges. By default, it traces the edges of the document. However, this isn't the style that I wanted. So if I double-click on the blending arrows here, I can easily change its mode. There is Multiply. Soft Light. Or adjust the opacity. And so now I'm getting a nice illustration type…
