- [Instructor] Before we start working with filters, some observations and some recommendations. Firstly, we want to make sure that we working with smart filters so that we can change our mind, so that we leave a trace, a path back to how we created the effect. In order to convert a layer for smart filters, either choose Convert for Smart Filters beneath the Filter menu or from the Layers panel menu, Convert to Smart Object or right click to the right of the layer name, Convert to Smart Object. You'll then see a smart object badge on the layer thumbnail. This means that when you apply a filter, that filter will be listed beneath the layer thumbnail, you can turn it on and off, you can work on its filter mask or its blending mode, more about those coming up in a moment. You can also double click on the filter to add more or less of that filter. You're taken back to the filter dialog and it remembers exactly how much you applied. I'll now throw that filter away.
