White reveals, black conceals

- [Instructor] Alright so the great aphorism of layer masking, that gets preached over and over again, is that white reveals and black conceals. So in other words, when you paint with white inside of a layer mask, you reveal, that is to say you show the contents of that layer. And if you paint with black, you conceal, that is to say hide the contents of that layer. So by way of demonstration I still have open my demon kitten composition. And let's say for the sake of demonstration, I want to add a layer of grass. And so armed with my Rectangular Marquee Tool, I'll go ahead and Right Click inside the image window. And I'll choose Duplicate Layer. And then I'll go ahead and change the Destination Document to Demon kitten.psd and I'll click OK. Alright now, I'll go ahead and rename this new layer grass. And then I'll drop down to the Add layer mask icon, at the bottom of the layers panel. And I'll click on it. And notice that that causes Photoshop to add an entirely white layer mask…
