- [Deke] It is my sincere hope that you now have a grasp on the basic techniques and tools that you need to make meticulous masks and imaginative compositions in Photoshop. I also hope you have a sense for which features you should use when. In fact, I'm so eager to see you succeed that I've created a quick table to help you decide not approximately, but exactly which tool or command to use when. So notice that we have three columns here, what do you want to select, best approach, and likelihood of success. So let's say you want to select a region of solid color, such as a large area of black or white inside a mask. Then grab the magic wand tool, set the tolerance to zero or something low, turn off the anti-alias checkbox, and click. The likelihood of success is roughly 100%.
