What is photogrammetry?

- [Instructor] In this video, you will be provided an overview of what photogrammetry is and how Pix4D calculates 2D and 3D maps or models from simple photos and does so very accurately. One thing I'd like to talk about here in the slide is these three main terms that really talk about how Pix4D works through this data. The first term is the BBA or bundle block adjustment. This is a relatively new mathematical model to calculate camera position and a 3D point on the Earth. Each camera's position must have the external camera parameters, or EO, calculated. In other words, through the image and using mathematics, it is possible to determine the orientation of that camera based on the angles and perspective of the image where the rays of light that are coming in to the lens and sensor from a 3D point in the real world. the internal camera parameters, or the IO, of the camera. The calculated image positions or the principle points combined with shared perspective angle calculations but in general, this method uses algorithms to decide where the images are in relation to one another. And then the next item here is the AAT, or some just call it in the industry, the AT. This is the automatic aerial triangulation. And that's how Pix4D defines it. the triangulation referred from the air. The detection of several prominent points from multiple directions by wide overlapping aerial images allows the calculation of the relative position of both these nodes, as well as the camera positions. So what that's really doing is it's looking on the ground to start bringing the imagery together. And the overall terminology that's used for Pix4D is photogrammetry. That's actually the art and science of measuring images. That is defined by Wiki. Photogrammetry is a group of measurement methods and evaluation methods of remote sensing to determine its spatial position or three-dimensional shape from photographs and accurate measurement images of an object. And that's the summary of these main complex ideas. In general, Pix4D uses these strategies and algorithms to pull the images together and algorithms to pull the images together to construct that 2D map, or a 3D model or map. to construct that 2D map, or a 3D model or map. And so through the course, And so through the course, you're going to see these terms come up again, you're going to see these terms come up again, probably through the menus of Pix4D. probably through the menus of Pix4D. So this just gives you some familiarity So this just gives you some familiarity with what we're getting into.
