- [Instructor] In this video, you'll be provided an overview of what a datum, coordinate system and projection are, generally, and how they have been created over the years, and how they are used to produce survey grade 2D and 3D maps. The datum is a translation of a map to a real world location, and as we read here, based on a mathematical ellipsoid or a stretched sphere, and then it defines the latitude, longitude and altitude coordinates. One or more locations on the Earth's surface are chosen as anchor or base points, so the datum is really taking that mathematical ellipsoid and putting coordinates to it. The next item, a geographic coordinate system, is a coordinate system that enables every location on earth to be specified by a set of numbers, letters or symbols. And the map projection is defined as to establish the position of a geographic location on a map. A map projection is used to convert geodetic coordinates to plane coordinates on a map.
