- The question are you an artist or just a photographer might sound a little rude, but it's actually meant to get you thinking about who you are and the work that you create. There is a distinction between the two and I think it's a mindset that separates an artist from a photographer in the traditional sense which is vital for creating a lasting career. Whether you consider yourself an artist or a commercial photographer or something completely different, that's another conversation. But what I want to talk about today is a shift in mindset that I believe has to take place in order for photographers to thrive in today's market. As we all know, the photography industry is changing at a rapid pace, and one of the biggest changes to come about from all this is the fact that photographers are no longer scarce.
