- I'm a stickler about light in my portraits. I just won't even shoot if there isn't exceptionally good light. I can find terrific light, but more often the light can be enhanced using some of these simple tools. This five-in-one reflector is my workhorse. It's got a cover on it that's got a white side and a silver side. It's got black and it's got gold, plus the inside is a scrim or diffuser. We're gonna cover several techniques for using all of these sides, and you'll see why this inexpensive tool is a must-have for portrait work. Similarly, I'll show you several techniques for using a simple piece of foam core or poster board like this one. You can find this at any craft store and most superstores carry them as well. When we talk about lighting a person, we'll actually define the light by the shadow that we see. These tools help us sculpt shadows to flatter and define a person's form. These reflectors work to shape the available light, the light that we can see in a room. But sometimes we need to augment that light for more control and specificity. So I'll introduce you to some simple ways to use a flash to help you take control of your light and make the most of any situation no matter what light is available. So now let's head out and find some great light.
