The impact of camera height and lens angle

- The height and position of your camera makes a big difference when you're making a picture. Usually, especially if I'm doing a professional headshot for somebody, I want the camera to be right on level or in about the middle of the picture. So, for instance here, we're photographing a straight on headshot and I've got the camera right about the same height as my subject's nose or mouth, and that's the middle of the picture. The picture's only showing about this much, so her mouth is in the middle, and that's a very good spot to be, because it's a respectful view of my subject. When we look at a photograph we are interpreting a lot of things about the body language and the position of the camera comes through as part of that. If we raise the camera really high and look downward at our subject, we're looking downward when we view the picture as well, and for a professional portrait we usually don't want to look down on someone.
