- [Voiceover] Hello, good to see you again. Welcome back to another edition of Building Your Technology Skills. My name is Martin Guidry, and this week we're going to be talking about DNS. DNS is an acronym, it stands for domain name system, and as this implies, it is a protocol for working with names of systems. Human beings in general, would rather work with names rather than numbers, but computers would rather work with numbers. So, for example, I don't want to have to memorize the IP address of every server I visit on the internet, I would rather memorize things like Microsoft.com, Google.com, Lynda.com, Linkedin.com, things like that. So we need something to translate from those words into IP addresses. Domain name system, DNS accomplishes exactly that. So for example, I could ask a DNS server, what is the IP address of Example.com? And it would respond to me with 93.184.216.34. Typically as an end user, I don't have to manually do this.
