- [Voiceover] Hi, and welcome back to another edition of Building Your Technology Skills. My name is Martin Guidry. And this week we're going to be talking about IP 6. So, every week I ask people if they have any suggestions for topics to go ahead and send them to me. And the most commonly requested topic has been an overview of IP 6. IP 6 stands for Internet Protocol Version 6, sometimes written as IP6, sometimes written as IPv6, the v standing for Version. The technology is older than a lot of people realize. Development actually started in 1994. And it was commercially available in Linux as early as 1996. So, IP 6 is over 20 years old, probably older than some of the people watching this video. IP 6 was developed specifically to address some of the limitations in IPv4. So, IPv4 is the version most commonly used right now. It is the IP addresses you commonly see with four octets separated by periods. Something like 192.168.1.100. IPv4 is limited to just over four billion possible…
