Understanding supernetting

Understanding supernetting

- [Voiceover] Hello and welcome back. This is Martin Guidry with another edition of Building Your Technology Skills. This week we're going to talk about supernetting. Supernetting is a technique of combining two or more subnets into a larger super network. This is done by using a less restrictive subnet mask, less restrictive than either of the subnets we're combining. It is typically used to simplify routing and therefore it is also sometimes called route summarization or route aggregation. So we'll look at an example. Here I have some information from my local router. There are three static routes in the table, one for 192.168.100.0, then 192.168.101.0, and finally, 192.168.102.0. All of them are using a 24-bit Subnet Mask and all of them are going to the same Default Gateway. Because they're all routing to the same Default Gateway, it is possible these three routes could be summarized as just one route. So for example if I added 192.168.0.0 and used a less restrictive Subnet Mask…
