Audio bit depth

Audio bit depth

- Okay, so now that we've learned about sample rate and how sample rate conversion can work, we're going to jump into the other part of digital audio that can cause some confusion, and that's bit depth. It's also called word length and it's how many bits per word or sample that defines the resolution of the digital audio, the zeros and the ones. Quantization, is how these bits are then distributed among the zeros and ones, the data points. The higher the bit rate, the more fine the resolution between the data points, the better the digital reproduction can actually be. It is also very finely in tune with the dynamic range or the dynamic resolution of the digital audio. Sample rate is one thing, how many snapshots per second. But bit depth actually gives you how much resolution within that sample that you can go. It relates to dynamic range. Meaning how softly and how loudly you can reproduce that digital audio. And this is very, very important. It's more important than people realize…
