- Sound, as we hear it, exists only as waves that transmit through the air. For many years, we have tried to convert these waves into other forms. So we have invented things like writing, to save the spoken words, and musical notation, which is how we write music. However, the sound itself, for many many years, was only be able to transmit live. That is, until we devised a way to record it. At the beginning, with wax cylinders, then bumps in a vinyl record, magnetically, with audio cassettes, and finally, digitally. In order to save our analog sound waves to digital information, we need to use a digital converter. And how the digital converters work is by turning those sound waves into samples. Consider each sample to be the equivalent of a pixel, but much much smaller. Each wave is recreated with these samples. However, digital samples are not smooth curves.
