Common file extensions for video and audio file types
- File extensions are the three or four-letter code that's after the dot in a file name, things like .jpg, .mov, these tell the computer what type of file they're looking at and this is related to the discussion of format and the discussion of codec when we talk about video files. So, let's take a quick look at some common file extensions so you know what to look for. I'm just looking at our exercise files here and I've twirled open some of the folders so we can see. We have MP4 which stands for MPEG-4 and is a common file extension. We also have MOV which is the QuickTime file extension. There are some others that you may see, here's a WAV and that's W-A-V for Wave Audio File and all of these are common, one that you don't see here is M4V which Apple and iTunes use for videos that you download from the iTunes store and you'd be looking for these, sometimes you won't see them, you may notice that Apple also offers you the choice to hide extension.
