Cutting on action

- Cutting on action, sometimes called matching on action, is an editing technique where the editor cuts from one shot to another and the on-screen action follows through the edit. So although the shots may have been filmed at very different times, when they're joined at the moment of identical action, it provides the impression that it's one continuous shot, thereby hiding the edit. Because of this, cutting on action is a classic continuity editing technique. And the most traditional use of cutting on action is when someone walks through a door, as in this example from the film His Girl Friday. - [Man] Little more around a (mumbles). - If you weren't looking for the cut, you wouldn't really notice it. And of course to make this work, continuity has to be maintained during filming. That means that if the actress opens the door with her right hand in shot A, she has to be opening the door with her right hand in shot B.…
