- [Instructor] After you get notes on your rough cut you'll probably, hopefully, have a lot of changes to make to improve your film. And the next big step is to declare picture lock. Picture lock is a critical step in the filmmaking process where the director and editor commit to not make any more changes to the visual edit points of the film. Picture lock is so important because the sound designer, the colorist, the visual effects artist, the composer, all these people can't really get to work in earnest until picture lock is achieved, because what they do is inherently connected to every single frame. For example if the composer wrote a bunch of music that was timed just perfectly and then you change an edit point the score might not match anymore. Imagine how annoying that would be and how much additional time it would waste for the composer to have to completely redo that section.
