Filling the viewfinder and framing the shot
Two other composition guidelines to keep in mind are to fill the frame or position people and objects off to one side of the frame and have them face into the frame, sort of like this, over here like that. The natural tendency when we were looking at our viewfinder is to focus our attention on the center of the viewfinder. But what's better is that you want to look around the outside edges and make sure you've got interesting elements throughout your shot. You've seen single or group portraits where the heads are in the center of the frame. That means the upper half of the photo probably has nothing of interest in it. Instead, as your compose your shots, scan around your viewfinder. Notice all that empty space and then adjust your composition accordingly. In the case of working with people, just tilt the camera down a bit to put their heads along that upper-third horizontal line I referred to in the rule of thirds movie.
