Getting good sound bites

The best stories involve people. Your viewers want to hear what those people have to say. So as you plan and shoot your stories, your character's comments take precedence. Now, you probably have a pretty good idea what those characters are going to say, but it's those unscripted moments that can make or break a piece. So I suggest you use wireless lavalier mics on your main character so that no matter where you point your camera, you can always record their comments, and as you conduct your interviews, I suggest you don't ask a lot of questions. Instead, make comments, observation. Have a conversation; you get better sound bites that way. As I shot video for this course, I listen for good sound bites. Here are a few.
