Insert shots and cutaways

- A cutaway is a shot that interrupts a continuously filmed action within the main scene. It's a staple in the world of continuity editing, because it allows the editor to connect shots in a cohesive way, and provide visual context to the viewer. In the film world, the term "cutaway" and "insert shot", are often interchanged with one another, but there is a difference. An insert shot is a closeup of some detail within the scene. Take a look at this scene from No Country for Old Men. It begins with a classic shot reverse shot. But then cuts to an insert shot that provides the needed context for the scene. - Heads in. - Well done. Don't put it in your pocket, sir. Don't put it in your pocket each other like Atwater. In this scene, from the Big Lebowski, insert shots are used as a series of close-ups and paint a picture of this character, which is a really creative storytelling device.
