Letting action start or end out of frame

Action shots can be difficult to edit. If you're following the same thing and you want to shoot it more than once, you need to have some way to go from one instance of that action to another. A cutaway is a good way to do that; you could have somebody watching the action, for example. Another way is to let the action start or end out of the frame, or both. And that way when you edit those two shots together, you don't have to worry about creating a jump cut. I used that technique several times as I shot video for this course. (video playing) For example, I am shooting this horse jumping. I know this rider and this horse are going to jump over this fence, so I position my camera down low to anticipated that and just waited for them to come into and out of the frame. That way I could go to the next shot without worrying about creating a jump cut. (Female speaker: Look and turn. That's it. All right! A hint of flexion to the right.)
