Montage

- Montage can mean many different things, but in classic filmmaking, it's come to mean an editing technique where different shots are juxtaposed together, often to condense time, space, information, or ideas. Montage editing is a major component of complexity editing because it features discontinuous moments that come together to make a new whole. There are many different types of film montage, and here I'd like to explore the most common, classic narrative montage. Most often, its job is to simply compress a story, showing something that happens over a very long time in a matter of moments for the sake of cinematic impact. In the animated film "Up", the Carl and Ellie montage tells the story of a 70-year relationship over the course of about four minutes.
