- Montage editing is a broad topic, so I thought it was important to explore it in multiple parts. We just looked at classic narrative montage, which is all about storytelling through the art of condensing time, showing character arcs, and depicting emotional changes. We're now going to dig a little deeper as we examine some more profound montage techniques. Specifically, I'd like to look at rhythmic montage and intellectual montage, which are two types of montage derived from Sergei Eisenstein's Five Methods of Montage theory, which he developed during the 1920s Soviet cinema movement. Each of these methods has laid much of the practical and psychological groundwork for montage creation ever since. First, rhythmic montage. Rhythmic montage is based on cutting shots to a specific time and tempo while also emphasizing the action in the frame.
