Performing replace edits

- [Instructor] We've learned a lot of ways - [Instructor] We've learned a lot of ways to get material into the timeline and how to tweak it to get material into the timeline and how to tweak it once it's there but there are still some more once it's there but there are still some more useful techniques for both editing and organization, useful techniques for both editing and organization, some of which we'll learn in this hodgepodge chapter some of which we'll learn in this hodgepodge chapter of many different useful post-production techniques. of many different useful post-production techniques. And specifically in this movie, we're going to explore And specifically in this movie, we're going to explore the replace edit. the replace edit. Right, so I have a scratch sequence here Right, so I have a scratch sequence here where I'm experimenting with a few shots where I'm experimenting with a few shots from our donut footage. from our donut footage. First here, I have a shot here of Madame Donut First here, I have a shot here of Madame Donut frying donuts and I have this action from several angles. frying donuts and I have this action from several angles. If I come over to my 6.1 bin, I have a bin If I come over to my 6.1 bin, I have a bin called replace shots and I'm going to load fry donuts 1. called replace shots and I'm going to load fry donuts 1. And you can see that this is a closeup action of this. And you can see that this is a closeup action of this. So what I want to do is start in the wide shot So what I want to do is start in the wide shot and then cut to the closeup and then cut to the closeup and then go back to the wide shot. and then go back to the wide shot. Now we know how to do this through an overwrite edit already Now we know how to do this through an overwrite edit already but I want to show you how you do this but I want to show you how you do this with the replace edit. with the replace edit. Now, I'm going to use the razor tool. Now, I'm going to use the razor tool. We've used this before but just to remind you, We've used this before but just to remind you, it's right here, keyboard shortcut C. it's right here, keyboard shortcut C. And I'm just going to cut this shot up where I want And I'm just going to cut this shot up where I want the edits to occur. the edits to occur. And I'm going to cut right And I'm going to cut right as she's at this second to last donut. as she's at this second to last donut. Okay, so here's the second to last donut Okay, so here's the second to last donut and she touches it right there. and she touches it right there. And I'm going to press C to enable the razor tool And I'm going to press C to enable the razor tool and if I just click, you'll notice that and if I just click, you'll notice that it cuts both the video and the audio. it cuts both the video and the audio. I don't want to do that, I want to just affect the video. I don't want to do that, I want to just affect the video. So I'm going to Option click or Alt click on a PC So I'm going to Option click or Alt click on a PC and it's just going to cut the video. and it's just going to cut the video. Alright, then I'm going to come to maybe about right there Alright, then I'm going to come to maybe about right there and Option click again. and Option click again. Alright, so I have marked a segment Alright, so I have marked a segment where I want to cut to the closeup. where I want to cut to the closeup. I have the closeup loaded. I have the closeup loaded. I've already marked an inpoint for you I've already marked an inpoint for you but basically, what you need to do but basically, what you need to do is mark an inpoint at that exact that you want to cut down is mark an inpoint at that exact that you want to cut down to the timeline. to the timeline. So again, you want to put an inpoint So again, you want to put an inpoint right where she's touching that second to last donut, okay? right where she's touching that second to last donut, okay? So I've done that. So I've done that. I've marked an in and I'm just going to drag down I've marked an in and I'm just going to drag down and if I drag down without holding down and if I drag down without holding down any modifier keys, you can see that it's not going to work. any modifier keys, you can see that it's not going to work. What I want to do is actually constrain this What I want to do is actually constrain this to this part of the shot here. to this part of the shot here. So I'm going to hold a modifier. So I'm going to hold a modifier. I'm going to hold down Option or Alt on a PC I'm going to hold down Option or Alt on a PC and notice when I do that, it goes straight into and notice when I do that, it goes straight into that segment that I've defined. that segment that I've defined. And I'll release and let's play. And I'll release and let's play. Aright, so that was performing a replace edit Aright, so that was performing a replace edit by quickly swapping out by quickly swapping out this portion of that shot and all you needed this portion of that shot and all you needed was a single mark inpoint in the source. was a single mark inpoint in the source. Remember, that's an Option drag or an Alt drag Remember, that's an Option drag or an Alt drag and that will constrain the shot and that will constrain the shot to the exact moment that you want. to the exact moment that you want. Let's take a look at a different type of replace edit here. Let's take a look at a different type of replace edit here. This is Madame Donut folding her dough This is Madame Donut folding her dough and wrapping it up and then I have this and wrapping it up and then I have this from another angle right here. from another angle right here. So again, I'm going to use the razor tool So again, I'm going to use the razor tool to cut it up the portion of the shot to cut it up the portion of the shot where I want to cut away to this other angle where I want to cut away to this other angle so let's find that. so let's find that. I think right as she's bringing the cellophane up, I think right as she's bringing the cellophane up, there's where I want to cut so I want to make sure there's where I want to cut so I want to make sure that my razor tool is enabled. that my razor tool is enabled. I'm going to press C and again, I just want to cut I'm going to press C and again, I just want to cut my video that my audio remains intact. my video that my audio remains intact. So I'm going to Option click so it just gets my video So I'm going to Option click so it just gets my video and let's go forward and see where we want this shot to end. and let's go forward and see where we want this shot to end. Alright, I think right where the cellophane Alright, I think right where the cellophane starts to come down again. starts to come down again. So I'll Option click here as well. So I'll Option click here as well. Alright and I'll go back to my selection tool, V. Alright and I'll go back to my selection tool, V. Okay so I've defined the area I want to cut away Okay so I've defined the area I want to cut away and this time I'm not even going to set an inpoint. and this time I'm not even going to set an inpoint. All I'm going to do is match up All I'm going to do is match up my playhead in the timeline with the playhead my playhead in the timeline with the playhead in source monitor and I want to make sure in source monitor and I want to make sure that it's at the same moment. that it's at the same moment. So let's find a suitable moment. So let's find a suitable moment. So when the cellophane comes down and touches So when the cellophane comes down and touches the table right there, that's where I'm going to park. the table right there, that's where I'm going to park. I'm not going to set an inpoint or an outpoint, I'm not going to set an inpoint or an outpoint, I'm simply going to park the playhead there. I'm simply going to park the playhead there. And let's do the same thing here in the source. And let's do the same thing here in the source. So here comes the cellophane and it touches the table, So here comes the cellophane and it touches the table, there we go. there we go. Okay, so that moment right here and this moment right here Okay, so that moment right here and this moment right here are the same so now all I'm going to do are the same so now all I'm going to do is just select this clip, right click and then come to is just select this clip, right click and then come to replace with clip from source monitor, match frame. replace with clip from source monitor, match frame. And I'll select that and now it's taking this moment And I'll select that and now it's taking this moment where the playhead is and substituted that moment where the playhead is and substituted that moment and it's front time and it's back timed and it's front time and it's back timed and now, we should be synced up quite well. and now, we should be synced up quite well. Alright, pretty good. Alright, pretty good. This was a seamless edit without needing This was a seamless edit without needing to set any in or outpoints. to set any in or outpoints. We just matched our playheads up and then performed We just matched our playheads up and then performed the match frame. the match frame. Alright, so replace edits are great ways Alright, so replace edits are great ways for you very quickly swap out material for you very quickly swap out material either with in or outpoints either with in or outpoints or just by using the playhead location or just by using the playhead location as the reference point for the swap. as the reference point for the swap.
