Planning your shoot

To create this course, I shot in a couple of dozen different locations. Each presented visual challenges. For example, I shot in a commercial bakery, an artist's studio, and a restaurant kitchen. In each case, I've planned and completed the shoot knowing in advance how much material and what kinds of shots I would need to tell visually interesting and complete stories. So the first order of business before you head off to do a shoot is to create a shot sheet. For most folks, there's no need to actually write it down, but you do need to consider the points you're going to make in your story. Then figure out all the kinds and quantities of shots you need to support those points and fill their respective time slots in your video. It's easy to forget that you also need scene transitions: shots that help you get from one scene to another.
