Shooting matched action and wide and tight shots
Our eyes work like medium-angle lenses. We tend to shoot video that way. Instead, get wide shots or tight shots of your subjects. This departure from the commonplace tends to hold viewers' attention. Taking that to the next level, try to shoot what's called matched action. That is, get wide shot of action, then you get a close-up of the same action. This enables your editor do what's called cutting on action. The results create continuity, even if you shot the video at different times, and it strengthens your story. To shoot matched action, you need to have repeated action or a cooperative subject who doesn't mind stopping what they're doing for a moment as you change your shot. For this course, I've shot dozens of matched action shots. Here are few of them. I got a wide shot of this farrier working on this horse's hoof and then I moved the camera closer to get the tight shot. Now this is really an important part of getting wide and tight.
