Smash cut

- [Narrator] A smash cut is a video editing technique where one shot abruptly cuts to another very different shot, usually by strongly contrasting visuals, audio, and movement. Often, in order to accentuate the impact of the smash cut, the scenes before and after the cut are very different. For example, a slow, calm scene crisply transitions to a tense, chaotic scene, or vice versa. Because of their dramatic quality, which overtly calls out the edit, smash cuts are a classic complexity editing device. Take a look at an example of a very basic smash cut from the film The Big Lebowsky. (air whooshes) (firework explodes) So the physical act of the punch was omitted, but between the stark contrast of the firework visual and the crashing audio of the bowling ball, this smash cut definitely packs its own punch.
