Swish pan

- One type of invisible edit that's accomplished by a quick deliberate camera movement is the whip pan or the swish pan. Whip pans occur when the camera pans so fast that the image blurs into indistinguishable streaks, and within these streaks, shots can be joined together. Whip pans are often used as transitions between shots or scenes and can also help show the passage of time or establish a sense of heightened energy or frenzy. Whip pans are rooted in continuity editing, since they're a device to help ground the scene in continuous flow, as edits are hidden within a sea of movement. Before showing you edited whip pans, let me show you some examples of in-camera whip pans. In this scene from "Whiplash," we see the camera quickly panning from the conductor to the drummer.
