- [Instructor] So far, we've learned a lot - [Instructor] So far, we've learned a lot about assembling and manipulating clips in our sequence. about assembling and manipulating clips in our sequence. Often, when you're going through this process, Often, when you're going through this process, you'll get the major components where they need to be, you'll get the major components where they need to be, but then you'll need to tweak the edits even more but then you'll need to tweak the edits even more to perfect timing and eliminate small errors, to perfect timing and eliminate small errors, and that is where trimming comes in. and that is where trimming comes in. Specifically, in this movie, we'll take a look Specifically, in this movie, we'll take a look at how to perform basic trims and ripple trims at how to perform basic trims and ripple trims to adjust the length of our clips and to control to adjust the length of our clips and to control where our clips begin and end. where our clips begin and end. Alright, so I have a partial version of our sequence here Alright, so I have a partial version of our sequence here of just our Madame Donut interview. of just our Madame Donut interview. This is before any B-roll has been added, This is before any B-roll has been added, and there are some problems, OK? and there are some problems, OK? So we're getting to play through some of these edits So we're getting to play through some of these edits and see how we can improve them. and see how we can improve them. Zoom in here, plus plus, Zoom in here, plus plus, and I'll start here at the beginning. and I'll start here at the beginning. - I can speak through donuts, like I- - I can speak through donuts, like I- - [Instructor] All right, so it looks like just - [Instructor] All right, so it looks like just the very first few frames of this shot the very first few frames of this shot need to be eliminated. need to be eliminated. The audio waveform of her beginning to speak The audio waveform of her beginning to speak right here is probably where this needs to begin. right here is probably where this needs to begin. So if I wanted to, I could perform an extract, So if I wanted to, I could perform an extract, and we already know how to do that. and we already know how to do that. I can set an in and an out, I can set an in and an out, and then press apostrophe to extract. and then press apostrophe to extract. But when you're performing these minute changes, But when you're performing these minute changes, that's too many steps. that's too many steps. So let me undo that, and then I can clear So let me undo that, and then I can clear my in and out points by pressing Option + X or Alt + X, my in and out points by pressing Option + X or Alt + X, and instead, you would want to trim here, OK? and instead, you would want to trim here, OK? So a basic trim is just when you're in general So a basic trim is just when you're in general selection mode, OK? selection mode, OK? The selection tool is enabled, The selection tool is enabled, and you grab onto the edge of a clip, and you grab onto the edge of a clip, and you'll notice that it is a red trimming indicator, and you'll notice that it is a red trimming indicator, and I can drag, and I've eliminated those frames, and I can drag, and I've eliminated those frames, and it leaves a gap in its wake, alright? and it leaves a gap in its wake, alright? So I could then just select the gap So I could then just select the gap and then press delete, and it's gone. and then press delete, and it's gone. But in this case, that's probably too many steps. But in this case, that's probably too many steps. Let me undo that, and I'd like to introduce you to Let me undo that, and I'd like to introduce you to something else called a ripple trim. something else called a ripple trim. That's over here in the Tool panel, the Ripple Edit Tool, That's over here in the Tool panel, the Ripple Edit Tool, keyboard shortcut B. keyboard shortcut B. So if I press B and then grab on to the edge of this, So if I press B and then grab on to the edge of this, you'll notice that now I have a yellow trimming indicator, you'll notice that now I have a yellow trimming indicator, and if I drag back, it eliminates the gap, OK? and if I drag back, it eliminates the gap, OK? So I believed I've solved my problem. So I believed I've solved my problem. - I can speak through donuts, like I-- - I can speak through donuts, like I-- - [Instructor] Alright, that's what we wanted. - [Instructor] Alright, that's what we wanted. Now, let's move on to this edit here Now, let's move on to this edit here and I'll play over this and let's see and I'll play over this and let's see if there are any errors over this edit. if there are any errors over this edit. - Minds about donuts, because... So, when--- - Minds about donuts, because... So, when--- - [Instructor] OK, so, here she says - [Instructor] OK, so, here she says I like to change people's minds through donuts, I like to change people's minds through donuts, and then she comes in and says so, and then she comes in and says so, but the problem on this shot, but the problem on this shot, is that we have too many frames, is that we have too many frames, and the problem on this shot is that we don't have enough. and the problem on this shot is that we don't have enough. So, we can again solve this through ripple trims. So, we can again solve this through ripple trims. So, let's find exactly where we want this shot to end. So, let's find exactly where we want this shot to end. - Minds about donuts, because... so-- - Minds about donuts, because... so-- - [Instructor] OK, so, I think, - [Instructor] OK, so, I think, we need that as the S on the end of donuts, we need that as the S on the end of donuts, but we need to eliminate everything at the end of this shot. but we need to eliminate everything at the end of this shot. So I could click and drag, and by the way, So I could click and drag, and by the way, when you do click and drag, it snaps to the playhead, when you do click and drag, it snaps to the playhead, which is handy, OK? which is handy, OK? That's as long as snapping is enabled. That's as long as snapping is enabled. But, I also want to show you how you do this But, I also want to show you how you do this with the keyboard. with the keyboard. So, if I just select the edge of this clip, So, if I just select the edge of this clip, and then I press Option + Left Arrow, and then I press Option + Left Arrow, or Control + Left Arrow on a PC, or Control + Left Arrow on a PC, you'll notice that I'm trimming one frame at a time. you'll notice that I'm trimming one frame at a time. And this is really nice when you're looking And this is really nice when you're looking at the audio waveform and you know that you have at the audio waveform and you know that you have a specific point that you need to go to. a specific point that you need to go to. Alright, let's see if we got it. Alright, let's see if we got it. - Minds about donuts, so-- - Minds about donuts, so-- - [Instructor] OK, I think that's good. - [Instructor] OK, I think that's good. Now, on this shot here, we need to add some frames. Now, on this shot here, we need to add some frames. So I'm again, going to just select this edge and So I'm again, going to just select this edge and I think I'll just drag out, I think I'll just drag out, and let's see exactly where the beginning of that word is. and let's see exactly where the beginning of that word is. OK, and it looks like the audio waveform bottoms out here, OK, and it looks like the audio waveform bottoms out here, so I think we've got it. so I think we've got it. I'm going to play over it. I'm going to play over it. - Minds about donuts, so-- - Minds about donuts, so-- - [Instructor] Alright, I think that works just fine. - [Instructor] Alright, I think that works just fine. Let's move on to our next edit. Let's move on to our next edit. I'll play over this. I'll play over this. - Brioche is, it's actually called the rich man's bread. - Brioche is, it's actually called the rich man's bread. - [Instructor] OK, and it sounds OK, - [Instructor] OK, and it sounds OK, but I think we can improve it. but I think we can improve it. One more time. One more time. - Brioche is, it's actually called the rich man's bread. - Brioche is, it's actually called the rich man's bread. - [Instructor] I think the shot here is just fine, - [Instructor] I think the shot here is just fine, but this one, we need to, maybe, eliminate some frames? but this one, we need to, maybe, eliminate some frames? So, she says brioche is So, she says brioche is actually called the rich man's bread, actually called the rich man's bread, so we'll eliminated this word here, so we'll eliminated this word here, which I believe is the word it's. which I believe is the word it's. By the way, when we are trimming, By the way, when we are trimming, just logistically speaking, just logistically speaking, when we're at a trim, the shot to the left, when we're at a trim, the shot to the left, is often called the A side shot, is often called the A side shot, and the shot to the right, is called the B side shot. and the shot to the right, is called the B side shot. So we will be eliminating the head of the B side shot here. So we will be eliminating the head of the B side shot here. I want to show you a couple more ways to trim here. I want to show you a couple more ways to trim here. And I'm going to go back to my selection tool, V, And I'm going to go back to my selection tool, V, because I want to show you that you don't actually have to because I want to show you that you don't actually have to enable the ripple trim tool by pressing B enable the ripple trim tool by pressing B in order to use it. in order to use it. I just temporarily enable that, I just temporarily enable that, I'll perform the trim, and then I'm back in editing mode, I'll perform the trim, and then I'm back in editing mode, so I'm not switching back and forth between so I'm not switching back and forth between ripple trim and selection mode all the time. ripple trim and selection mode all the time. Alright, at any rate, let's play over this Alright, at any rate, let's play over this and see if we got it. and see if we got it. - Brioche is actually called the ri-- - Brioche is actually called the ri-- - [Instructor] Alright, I think - [Instructor] Alright, I think we could maybe eliminated a few more frames here. we could maybe eliminated a few more frames here. By the way, when you are clicking By the way, when you are clicking on one side of the edit or other, on one side of the edit or other, if you don't get on either the A side or the B side, if you don't get on either the A side or the B side, and you go in the middle, and you go in the middle, you'll notice that both the A side and the B side you'll notice that both the A side and the B side are selected. are selected.
