Understanding HDR

- HDR refers to high dynamic range video, and this is a video that has a higher dynamic range than that of standard dynamic range video, or SDR. So what exactly does dynamic range mean? Well, the dynamic range is the difference between the brightest and the darkest part of the video. In HDR, we can have brights that are brighter and darks that are darker. Also, in HDR, the in-between steps will show more clearly, and we'll be able to see more detail in the shadows and the brights. HDR also implies that we can get a wider gamut, and what that means is that the codec of the video will be able to display or save more colors than SDR. There are different types of HDR, but we'll save that for a different title. What we do need to understand for this title is that not all codecs support HDR, and HDR contains more data than SDR, which means that it will be affected by compression.
