Understanding coverage

- Continuity editing is all about creating seamless, cohesive scenes. Its goal is to support the story by linking shots together in an almost invisible manner. And one of the most important concepts to understand about successful continuity editing is something called coverage. Coverage is the practice of shooting a scene multiple times from multiple angles, which provides the editor with all the shots needed to portray a scene. First, during pre-production, the scene is broken down into different shot setups like wide shots, medium shots, closeups, extreme closeups, insert shots and cutaways. During production, the director shoots or covers the same action over and over again using these different shot setups. That's why it's called coverage.
