Understanding nonverbal dialogue

- I now want to focus on something very important about dialogue scenes, and that is what happens nonverbally with the characters. Indeed, in many, many cases, the nonverbal is as important or even more important than what is being said. And as editors, we've got to understand that and use that when creating our scenes. Of course many nonverbal elements are introduced at one of the previous two points of filmmaking, in the writing of the script as well as on set with the directors and actors. So the editor certainly uses these moments in constructing the narrative. However, there are also so many more moments that the editor can find and finesse during the editing process. Incorporating these nonverbal cues and actions allow editors to really give a dialogue scene life. It turns the boring tennis match that we talked about earlier into something with the proper emotion, intention, and heart.
