Using the Essential Sound panel: Loudness and dynamics

- [Instructor] Go ahead and open sequence 1.5. In here you will see three pieces of music. The first one. The second one. And then the third one. If you want for all of them to have the same audio level you could select them all, give them a classification of music, after all, that's what they are and you can go to the very first section in the Essential Sound panel, which is loudness. From here, you can click on auto match. You see that after it's done and it's pretty quick, that it auto match to target loudness of minus 25 and let me make this a little bit wider, LUFS. So if I play these, you're going to see that they are pretty much at the same level and I'm saying you will see, because you can clearly see it here in the audio meters panel, let me reset those indicators. (music playing) but also notice that in here, we don't have too many options it's either auto match it or don't auto match it. So if you want to change that to something different, maybe you want your music to be louder than minus 25 LUFS, or maybe you want for your music to be softer, I usually have it softer than that, well this is not a recommended work flow for Premiere, but it's very doable. Let's go ahead and close Premiere. Let's go ahead and close it, I'm not going to save it and now, in my file explorer, I'm going to go to My Documents folder, in here I'm going to choose Adobe, Premiere Pro, your version of Premiere Pro, in this case 13, the profile, settings, Essential Sound, default and in here you can see ambience, dialogue, generic, music and sound effect. The one that I want is music and this very top one, the one that says config.essentialsound, that's the one that I need to edit. Now if you feel a little bit squeamish about doing this, make a copy of this, so Control C, Command C on the Mac and then paste it onto your Desktop and now you have a copy of this that we are not going to modify. So the one that is in your documents folder, right click it and open with and I'm going to open it with Notepad. I'll tell it to Word Wrap and here we go. So I need where it says model loudness and you can see it right here, model loudness. And it then it keeps on going, default loudness, et cetera et cetera and then type float value minus 25. That is what I want to change so instead of minus 25 maybe I want to have a minus 35 and now when I go and auto match my audio, it should match it to minus 35. So here we go, I'm going to save this, close it and let's go ahead and open Premiere again. Open the project. Open your sequence. And let's go ahead and select all three of these again music, loudness and now let's click auto match. As you can see, let me make this a little bit wider so we can see it, as you can see the auto match to target loudness now reads minus 35 LUFS. So you can change this, it's just not a recommended workflow by Adobe. This works with any audio classifications, so if you want to change what your narration does, or your music or your sound effects, you would change it exactly the same way that you saw me change the one for music.
