Using smooth zooms and pans

Another means to ensure your viewers do not suspend disbelief is to use smooth zooms and pans. Fast zooms or snap pans like this jar your viewers back to reality. Now, fast moves are not inherently wrong; they're certainly a part of action scenes. But as a general practice, you don't want your camera moves to distract your viewers. To get smooth zooms and pans, you need to use a solid tripod like this, plus what they call a fluid head. A good fluid head means that when you initiate a pan, there is not that sort of sudden release, that snap that happens when you use a lower-quality head. It also means that when you zoom in, you can tilt and pan at the same time and get a real nice smooth zoom. So let me show you a few examples. In this interview, I wanted to add a little bit of drama, so I was zooming in slightly during the sound bite. It's a great way to add some drama, just do a little bit of a push, and the fluid head allows that to happen smoothly without distracting the viewers…
