Welcome and what you need to know before taking this course

- Hi, I'm Robbie Carman and welcome to Color for Video Editors. As a professional colorist with over 20 years of experience and as an educator I talk to a lot of editors who say things like, no matter what I do, I can't seem to get good at color correction. Or color correction is so hard. Or maybe even, I just move the controls around, you know, until something good happens. Indeed, color correction is hard, but with some background knowledge and some practical strategies you can begin to simplify color tasks for any project and start to think more like a dedicated colorist. This course is not what you might consider a traditional software course, although there are dozens of relevant courses here on the online training library about different color tools and you should definitely check those courses out. Instead of going over specific tools or software features in this course we'll explore need to know information and workflow approaches in the broader sense, so you can apply those concepts to your own projects. We'll start out with an overview of how we see, including understanding a bit of how our brain is often lying to us. Next, I will play a few visual games with you. These visual games will help us better understand the importance of setting up a good color correction environment as well as providing a better way of understanding the tricks that our minds play on each one of us. Two of the hardest things that editors have trouble with when it comes to color is, where do I start my color work and how long and how hard will this project be? We'll discuss both questions and I'll provide you with some methods to conquer both issues. Part of color correction is understanding technically what's going on in the clip. Is it too bright? Is it too dark? Is the color balance correct? That's where scopes come into play and we'll explore all the kind of scopes and what they can tell you about shots. Finally, color correction is largely about approach. If you're facing a 1,000 shot show, how do you efficiently attack that project. In the last two chapters in this course we'll talk about how to break a project down into six actionable parts and how to think about different ways of employing color correction management. If you're looking to fill in the blanks and discover new ways of thinking about color on your next project, then this title is for you. And don't worry, other than a keen interesting in color correction, there's no other requirements for watching this title. I'm Robbie Carman and thanks for joining me.
