What are closed captions?

- Now if I were to ask you, what are closed captions, you would say, hey, it's that text that appears on the screen. Well I need to be a little bit more defined then that, so let's take a look at a couple of ideas here. Closed captions specifically are that additional text based titling that's embedded into the media or is a sidecar file. And by a sidecar file I mean it's a file like a .xml, that goes with your media. It's timed to the video, so as the video progresses this text changes. What makes it a closed caption is that it can be turned on and off. That it can be turned off by the user. That it's not permanently burned into the actual media. And closed captions may have a secondary language track. There are the closed caption formats, a number of slots where you can put your closed captions. One of the things that makes closed captions so valuable is that they're hardware based. Televisions can decode them, you can buy a closed caption decoder for old, old, old televisions that…
