What is compression?

- Compression is the process of taking perfectly good bits of information and trashing them. This makes the file size smaller and therefore a particular device, whatever the device, will be able to easily play back the video. At the date of this recording, most systems in the market cannot easily handle uncompressed files, especially 4K or 8K. To put this in perspective, look at this chart for a one minute of uncompressed video going at 29.97 frames per second. A minute of HD video is about 11 gigabytes and look at the 8K video, that's roughly 175 gigabytes per minute. Now, compare that to a typical HD YouTube video that will run at about 120 megabytes per minute, much more manageable. There are lossless compression techniques in which files are converted, but do not lose any bits of information so the original data can be reconstructed perfectly from the compressed data.
