Wipes

- A wipe is a type of transition effect where one shot replaces another by way of a moving border or shape. Because wipes travel in a specific direction they're not only a device to transition between scenes or suggest a passage of time, but they can also help indicate spatial movement within the frame. Wipes are almost always used as a more heavy-handed stylistic element because they tend to draw attention to themselves. They're not used very often in modern cinema. And if they are, it's usually for a comic or ironic effect. Perhaps the most famous use of the wipe is in the Star Wars franchise. George Lucas uses the wipe as his stylistic scene transition of choice. And so whether that means the traditional soft, horizontal wipe or any number of different directional or shape wipes, it's his signature move in all the Star Wars Films.
