The role of data rates

- One key concept that we think about when we're encoding video is data rate. Sometimes also referred to as bit rate. And it's exactly what it sounds like. It's how much data is being used per amount of time in a video to create the signal and the image. So we often see the abbreviation BPS and that's for bits per second. It's a way to measure how that data is being spread out across time. Often BPS is prefaced by the common abbreviations, K for kilo or M for mega. And we're used to seeing those with file sizes as well, kilobytes and megabytes. Now here's where things get a little interesting. Files are usually measured in bytes but rates are usually measured in bits. Okay so what's the difference? A byte is eight bits of data. So there's a factor of eight in there. Now I don't know why rates are measured in bits and not bytes, it's just the way it is and the way it's always been. So if you wanted to calculate your file size from your bit rate, you could do that. Now usually you don't…
