Inline, offline, and near-line production

- When you look at the print production workflow folding happens in the last step, the print finishing process. And finishing can be built into the workflow in three different ways: Offline, Near-line, and Inline. Offline finishing is basically when the printing process is entirely separate from the finishing process so the printed sheets are transferred to the finishing equipment and the press does not communicate with the finishing equipment. This is really common because commercial printers often have to adapt to different sheet sizes and formats and have lots of jobs that may only run once or twice. There's also a legacy component to Offline finishing. It's where all printers started out and many of them continue to have manual offline equipment in their shops because it still works and it allows them to have a lot of flexibility.
