Panels vs. pages

- The difference between panels and pages is one of the most commonly confused concepts in folding. But if you're describing a fold to your printer and you use the wrong term, you can really confuse everyone involved. Here are the basics. Panels are two sided sections of the final folded piece. A page is one side of a panel. For example, the trifold you see here is 3 panels and each of the 3 panels is two sided and each side is considered a page. So, the trifold has 6 pages and 3 panels. Now, if we take that same fold and make it a broad side trifold instead by folding it in half before trifolding it down, then it becomes a 6 panel brochure and the page count rises to 12. Your page count is always double your panel count. Let's try a few more. This roll fold has 4 panels and 8 pages. This accordion fold is five panels and ten pages. Here's a fun specialty fold. This reveal folder has 9 panels and 18 pages. As you can see, it's pretty easy once you get the hang of it.
