- As we delve deeper into the properties of paper, let's take a closer look at paper's physical dimensions, how they're determined, and what they mean for you. This would also be a perfect time to talk about grain direction, a property of all papers, which is related to sheet size and especially important in the printing and finishing process. All paper mills keep standard sheets and rolls in stock to serve the demands of a crazy range of products, projects, and press sizes. From letterhead and eight-and-a-half by 11 for a desktop laser printer, to one ton rolls for high-speed book publication, there's a paper that's just right for every type of job. The dimensions of paper are directly related to printing press sizes, whether small format digital presses, or large scale, high-speed web presses.
