ARP 2600 history

- [Instructor] ARP in ARP 2600 isn't short for arpeggio or arpeggiator, it stands for Alan R. Pearlman, ARP's creator. Alan was interested in electronic instruments as early as the late 1940s and was a student at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He began his career by commercializing amplifier models for NASA Gemini and Apollo space programs. In 1969, Alan R. Pearlman, Lewis G. Pollock, and David Friend created ARP Instruments. This company was originally called Tonus and was based in Massachusetts. The company made several electronic products, but the most notable one was the ARP 2500, which was a giant modular synthesizer. This version of the ARP used a mod matrix, which was connected to various sections of the synthesizer instead of cables found in most modular synthesizers for patching. We'll cover some interesting modular synths and do some patching later in this course. The ARP 2500 first found success in universities for teaching sound design, much like we're working together…
