- [Instructor] Someone has asked you to saturate an instrument and sometimes they'll ask you to saturate a mix and what saturation refers to is, again, another subtle version of overdrive or drive or distortion even but with a much different application where they're probably talking about a sound they've heard when analog tape has been saturated. Meaning, the signal applied to the tape is so hot that it's overflowing in a way, the way you could picture a vase overflowing with water, with signal and the resulting effect is a compressed effect, a saturation of warmth, you could say grit with this, but I like, especially, the word "gooshy" or "tubey". Like, it sounds like a valve tube for a slightly overdriven amplifier. That's the other kind of electronic saturation that people are talking about when they use that word. This is my favorite device with which to add saturation effects, especially to vocals and drums and let me give you a little taste of that right here. (music playing)…
