Altering the spatial location of drums

- [Instructor] One of my favorite things to do is to take an instrument that is generally placed in the center of your stereo mix and giving it the illusion of placement in a room other than the center, and adding that signal back into the direct signal. This maintains the power of, for instance, we'll use the snare drum in this example. The power of the drums that should be coming out of both speakers, but gives the listener the opportunity to hear it in a space that's not so balanced. A little bit off on the left-right side, like a real drum kit would be. If you stuck your head right in the middle of a drummer's drum kit, you'd hear this snare off to one side, the floor tom off to another side, and so on and so forth. But you really want that kick and snare to feel like they're in the middle of the mix. So how do I get something that should be mono to sound like it's a little off-center without taking the mono part away from it? And without using tricks like the center plug in or…
