- [Instructor] Analog summing is mainly found in large format consoles. Part of the console's many features is the ability to sum its multiple channels down to a stereo channel for a final mix. Some of the most common features are pan, channel volume, channel mute and stereo output. Additional features are channel and stereo bus inserts as well as options for linking multiple units. A benefit of using a summing mixer is that it offers tonal characteristics reminiscent of a large format console as well as added head room. There are various elements in this circuitry such as op-amps and transformers that affect the tone which offers that console sound. Just as with mic preamps as I discussed earlier, this is another example of how op-amps and transformers can color the signal. What many people don't realize is that in the analog domain there are many non-linearities between channels which contributes to our perception of hearing a wider or deeper sound stage.
