Capturing room tone

- [Instructor] One of the most iconic traditions on a film set is when room tone is captured. This is when audio is recorded of the environment with nothing else happening, usually for about 30 to 60 seconds. - [Recordist] Those of you guys new to movie sets, we do this thing called room tone, wherever you just, you just stand there and you're just quiet. So you just, everybody's just silent for a few seconds. So, we're going to do that. - [Instructor] The sound recorderist has everyone just stand still and be quiet while they capture the ambient sounds of the space. To the uninitiated, it sounds just like silence, but to an editor and a sound mixer, room tone is extremely helpful in patching together a scene. Oftentimes editors will need to stretch out scenes to make them longer, or cut out words or entire lines of dialogue, or maybe some other weird audio anomaly that happened. And those actions tend to leave empty…
